The small town of Granger has all the appearances of a typical community in central Texas. However, its location and rich history provide those who call Granger home a wonderful place to live. Despite its small size, Granger has its own fire and police departments and offers many of the services found in larger communities.
Located in central Texas, Granger is just south enough to enjoy mostly mild winters, but does experience snowfall on rare occasions. However, summers are quite warm and even hot for three to four months out of the year as is typical for this part of the country. Dry and relatively flat with some rolling countryside, Granger offers a wide main street and many historical buildings that were constructed around the turn of the 20th century.
Arguably best known to outsiders as a popular film location for television shows and movies like the 2010 remake of “True Grit”, Granger continues to be place where its history serves as the foundation for its reach into the modern world.
The History of Granger, Texas
The city of Granger was first formed in 1882 thanks to the railroad which created in intersection for the Missouri, Kansas and Texas branches that led to Houston and San Antonio. The town itself was first named Pollack, but was changed to Granger to honor a Civil War veteran. Within a few years a post office was established and the little community began to grow.
By the turn of the 20th century, Granger has reached a population of 841 people and was growing rapidly thanks to a number of different factors. By World War One, Granger was the only town in Texas with fewer than 5,000 people to have paved streets. By the mid-1920s Granger had reached over 2,000 people, but began a gradual decline as the move to urban areas began in earnest.
Today, Granger is still a thriving community that offers its residents the benefits of its location, services and rich history. Nearby Granger Lake was created in 1981 and offers the community as well as tourists many outdoor recreational opportunities. Granger is also located just north of Austin, Texas which makes the community easy to visit and enjoy.

The town’s government is a typical city council that is run by an elected Mayor and meets once each month to discuss the matters of the city. For the residents, this form of representational government is one that works quite well for a community of its size.
The future of Granger is certainly one that offers plenty of opportunities thanks to its unique relationship with the television and movie industry. The impressive use of many parts of the town for location shooting in “True Grit” demonstrates the foresight of the town council in their efforts to bring more business to their community.
Granger, Texas is a community that has experienced a great deal in its history and today is actually using part of its rich past to set a course for a better tomorrow for its residents.
