The town of Jarrell, Texas is located in Williamson County and is just 12 miles north of the city of Georgetown. While the town itself has just under 1,000 people and is considered on the outer edge of the greater Austin area, Jarrell does have a number of surrounding communities that help bolster its overall population.

The History of Jarell, Texas

The town was founded in 1909 by O.D. Jarrell, a real estate developer and was situated at the intersection of the Bartlett and Western Railway and an old stagecoach road. Once the town was founded, two stores, a post office, a bank and a saloon were quickly built at the location. The town of Jarrell quickly picked up a few residents from nearby Corn Hill and by 1914 Jarrell had reached nearly 500 people.

However, once the railroad closed and the cotton industry which was the backbone of the economy shrank significantly, the town began to lose its population and decreased to a mere 200 people. However by the turn of the 1990s Jarrell was growing again and by the entry of the 21st century it had increased up to the population that is seen today along with several new businesses.

Like many towns in central Texas, Jarrell by a devastating tornado which killed 27 people. The F5 was one of the most powerful on record, however today the town has physically recovered from the devastation and is now growing even more thanks to its forward looking approach.

In 2001, the city was officially incorporated and provides a welcome respite for those who enjoy living in a small, prosperous town that is within commuting distance of Austin.

The City Government

The incorporation of Jarrell led to the formation of its city government. The town is led by a city manager who helps run the city council that meets on every 3rd Tuesday of the month. The town’s emergency services are provided by a volunteer fire department while the Chief of Police maintains the order and currently Jarrell enjoys a very low crime rate.
