Press Release | Sept 9, 2014 | Cleared of Criminal Wrongdoing | Officer Stephen Stem

September 9, 2014

Stephen Stem was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in the shooting death of Hearne resident Pearlie Golden by a Robertson County grand jury today.

On May 6, 2014, Stem responded to a 911 call made by Mr. Roy Jones. Ms. Golden had threatened Jones with a gun after he refused to return her car keys to her. When Stem arrived on the scene, Golden pointed a loaded revolver at both Stem and Jones. Even after Stem identified himself as a police officer and ordered Golden to put the gun down multiple times, she refused.   In response to the real, immediate and deadly threat created by Golden, Stem shot Golden. She later died from her injuries.

Although the end result was tragic, Stem stands behind his actions, which likely saved both himself and Jones from serious, imminent harm.
